Vietnam's garment export to Japan surges in first six months

HANOI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Customs said that the country raked in 440 million U.S. dollars from garment and textileexport to Japan in the first six months this year, a year-on-year increase of 22 percent, the local newspaper Vietnam Economic Timesreported Thursday.

The increase was owed to tax reduction scheme applied on Vietnam's export items to Japan. The scheme was a result of the signing the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, by the two governments at the end of last year, said the newspaper.

According to the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association, the figure showed a positive sign for the country's sector at the timewhen other foreign importers like the U.S. and the European Union are narrowing their demand of 15 percent.

The association forecast that Vietnam's garment and textile export turnover to Japan this year would be likely to go up 18 to 20 percent year-on-year, bringing home from 900 million U.S. dollars to one billion U.S. dollars.
