When Adidas’s legendary three stripes appeared on Gucci’s autumn/winter 2022 runway, editors craned their necks. Could it really be another stroke of genius from the brand behind 2021’s cult “crossover”: Gucci’s hacking of Balenciaga? Yes, it could. Alessandro Michele, a longtime Gazelle sneaker collector, felt an affinity with the retro ease of Adidas, and so he teamed up with the German sportswear giant on a collection of Trefoil-meets-GG monogram pieces that had hypebeasts salivating.
Adidas X Gucci isn’t the only sports-fashion fusion keeping Vogue editors in trainers and track pants for the foreseeable. Roksanda Ilincic translated her love of volume into a technical outerwear capsule with Fila for autumn/winter 2022. Great big duvet coats, cocoon-like parkas and windshield jackets floated down the runway – each in a happy-making colourway and branded with a joint logo that will translate as a badge of honour on street-stylers next season. “Sportswear and loungewear were never part of my vocabulary, but they became so, even for me, during the pandemic,” explained Ilincic, who usually majors in bold dresses beloved by art types.
